Lass uns drinnen anfangen. Das Herz dieses Rotors ist ein Schweizer Automatikwerk Sellita SW 200-1 mit Datum um 3 Uhr. Es ist eine moderne Bewegung, mit 26 Rubinen und das funktioniert bei 4Hz (28.800 Wechsel / Stunde); enthält einen zweiten Anschlag (den Sekundenzeiger beim Ziehen der Krone, um die Einstellung der Uhrzeit zu erleichtern) und eine manuelle Seiloption (nützlich zum schnellen Zurücksetzen der Gangreserve, das sind etwa 38 Stunden).

Die Stahlbox hat, wie gesagt, 37mm Durchmesser und die elegante 10,5mm Dicke. Der Boden, mit Gewinde, hat Glas zur Bewegungsbeobachtung. Allerdings beschloss Rotor - wie bei den meisten seiner Modelle -, auf das teuerste Saphirglas zu verzichten, indem er sich für ein Mineralglaszifferblatt entschied.

Die Ausführung des Zifferblatts ist sehr gut gelungen, mit großen arabischen Ziffern in den geraden Positionen und Indizes in der übrigen, alle mit schwarzem Finish, Farbe, die auch in den Händen verwendet wird. Um das Problem der Lesbarkeit zu lösen, hat sich Rotor dafür entschieden, eine lumineszierende Behandlung auf der gesamten Anzeige durchzuführen , was bedeutet, dass das Lesen nicht durch die Sichtbarkeit von Zeigern und Indizes im Dunkeln erfolgt, sondern durch den Kontrast zwischen ihnen und dem hellen Hintergrund .

Eine letzte Designentscheidung, die mir gefällt, ist die Aufnahme eines durchgehenden Textilriemens , das Rotor in vier Farben anbietet: Grau (auf dem Foto), Schwarz, Olivgrün und Creme.

Exploring Different Types of Watch Crystals

The crystal of a watch — the clear cover that goes over the dial and protects it — can be made of a variety of materials. Generally, there are three types of crystals used in watchmaking: sapphire crystals; mineral crystals; and Plexiglas (often called plastic) or hesalite (acrylic) crystals.

Typically, in the luxury watch field, sapphire crystals are preferred. Sapphire is extremely strong and scratch resistant, making it the top choice for a fine timepiece. While sapphire is the most expensive of the three crystal choices, it has its advantages due to the scratch and shatter resistance.

The term sapphire for a watch crystal can be somewhat misleading, in that they are not typically made from natural corundum. Instead, sapphire crystals are usually created as a synthetic compound with the same properties as its natural counterpart. The process of producing sapphires synthetically was invented in 1893 by French chemist Auguste Victor Louis Verneuil, and shared with the world in 1902. Thus, it is called the Verneuil Process, but is more commonly referred to as flame fusion.



Essentially, in flame fusion, a long column of sapphire is manufactured in a Verneuil furnace. Powder-sized aluminum oxide particles are sprinkled through an oxyhydrogen flame, and expected to melt at temperatures over 2000 degrees Celsius. They then fall below the melting point (or flame) and fuse with one another again to re-crystallize. Hence the name Flame Fusion. The column of crystallized synthetic sapphire is slowly lowered away from the flame, allowing more crystal to form on top. Eventually, the long cylindrical rod is complete and removed. It is then sliced (with diamond-tipped cutters) and polished to become a watch crystal.

In addition to being scratch resistant, a sapphire crystal has more ability to withstand cracks and breakage than glass or plastic. In fact, only a diamond or another sapphire can scratch the surface. Additionally, because it is so crystal clear, anti-reflective coatings can be added to both sides without any hazing or blurring of the crystal.



Mid-priced watches most often utilize the mineral glass crystal. The cost of these lies between the cost of sapphire crystals and the cost of plastic crystals. Generally, a mineral crystal is an ordinary glass crystal that has been heat treated or chemically treated to withstand scratches. While it is not as scratch-resistant as sapphire, it is more scratch-resistant than plastic. In extreme hot or cold conditions the glass can actually crack or shatter when hit bluntly on a certain angle. The main benefit of a mineral glass crystal lies in the price of the watch. It is difficult by sight to tell if a crystal is mineral or sapphire.

Plastic crystals are often referred to as Plexiglas, acrylic or hesalite. Plastic is the least expensive option and is most commonly found on lower-priced wristwatches. Plastic will not shatter or crack, but it does scratch easily. These crystals are sometimes preferred in the field because of their shatter-resistant qualities.

Last week we offered an inside look at what it means when a watch is classified as a certified chronometer. That blog post naturally sparked some interest from watch aficionados about the origins of chronometers — a topic so vast that several books have been written on the subject.

Here, we try to put that long historical saga of how chronometers came to be into a compact overview for those who love the water and love precision. The invention of today’s chronometer was no easy feat. In fact, it was one that took nearly a century. As early as the mid-1600s, when European countries were intent on sea-faring expeditions and exploration, they faced a single deadly obstacle: being unable to find longitude at sea, often causing them to run aground and sink.

England, France and other countries tirelessly pursued a way to create a ship’s timepiece that could keep accurate time on the high and frequently savage seas, and enable captains to chart longitude via a standard time and celestial navigation. In 1714, the United Kingdom’s Parliament established the Longitude Act, complete with a Board of Longitude, and offering the Longitude Prize (20,000 pounds, comparable to 2.87 million pounds or $4.5 million today) to anyone who could find a method for determining a ship’s longitude. This quest became the life work of many watchmakers and inventors, including British watchmakers John Arnold and also John Harrison, who worked until the age of almost 80 to introduce and perfect the invention of the chronometer.



Traditional clocks with pendulums did not work on a moving vessel that was continually rolling and pitching with the waves. Harrison, instead, created a vertical escapement clock with larger balance and temperature compensation. The clock could be used as a portable standard because it offered accurate time at a fixed location — Greenwich Mean Time — despite the sea’s wrath. With that knowledge, and with some calculations at local noon, sailors could determine the ship’s longitude.

Of course, while it sounds relatively easy, it was not – especially in the days when every part of the clock was cut and made by hand. Each time a clock was finished, it went on a voyage of length to determine its reliability. It was John Harrison’s fifth clock that was finally deemed to be highly accurate at sea — in the year 1773. That invention resulted in fewer lives lost and a grand proliferation of seafaring dominance by the Brits.
